Ranga Movie Synopsis: A newly married couple goes to Manali for their honeymoon only to discover that the hotel they are staying in is secretly recording their clients' private moments and uploading them online. With the boss of the criminal operation on their heels, can they survive?

Ranga Movie Review: DL Vinod's Ranga is the kind of film with a concept that looks like a good idea for a solid B movie. It is largely a movie featuring an extended chase, with innocent characters on the run. To top it, we also get a high concept involving a medical condition.

Here, it is the alien hand syndrome, a condition that we have already seen in the 2017-film Peechankai. The condition involves a person's hand acting on its own. Here, it is the protagonist Aadithya (Sibi Sathyaraj) who has this condition. He falls in love with his childhood sweetheart Abinaya (Nikhila Vimal), and despite the condition, they manage to get married by keeping it a secret from her family.

Just when everything seems to be going well, trouble starts during their honeymoon in Manali. Aadi discovers that the hotel they are staying in is secretly recording their clients' private moments and making money by uploading those videos online. But with the boss of the criminal operation (Mohnish Raheja) after them, can the couple survive, given that they are in an alien land where they can trust no one?

It is one thing to come up with an idea but a wholly different thing to make it work on screen and this is where Ranga comes into a cropper. Neither the writing nor the making keeps us involved in the proceedings. The portions until the couple go to Manali are cringe-worthy. The film's idea of comedy is having Manobala chase old ladies whom he calls Nayanthara, Hansika, and Sunny Leone, or having Sathish and Shiva Shara speak in double entendres! To. To make things worse, there's zero chemistry between a miscast Sibi Sathyaraj and Nikhila Vimal. A film of this kind deserves a romance that sizzles but gets one that fizzles out right when it begins. The alien hand syndrome, too, comes and goes on a whim. Also, unlike the recent Etharkkum Thunindhavan, the film doesn't have any constructive point to make about hidden cam videos and treats feminine nudity as a matter of 'shame' and 'honor'.

What keeps us watching is the location the film is set in. The snow-clad mountainscape gives weight to the film's survival thriller credentials, and the perpetual snow — which leads to the visuals that look foggy and menacing, with danger at every turn — adds some atmosphere to the lackluster script. The director's use of historical fiction — of an ancient king named Ranga Arasudaiyan, who also suffered from an alien hand syndrome, and had to protect his queen Kodhai from an invader — lends some interesting parallels to the situation that the leads are in.
