That is how Sony's creepy thriller "The Invitation" managed to top box office charts with a paltry $7 million. Its win comes with some pretty weak bragging rights; it's the lowest first-place finish since May 2021, when COVID was keeping people at home.

Now, it's not the pandemic that's preventing audiences from going to theaters, it's the lack of appealing options. Overall, the domestic box office generated just $54 million over the weekend, the worst collective result in months.

And the bad times are expected to continue until at least late September or early October, when "Don't Worry Darling" (Sept 23), "Halloween Ends" (Oct. 14) and the comic book adaptation "Black Adam" (Oct 21) open in theaters. It's a disappointing finale to an otherwise strong summer at the movies, which fielded plenty of box office hits including "Top Gun: Maverick," "Minions: The Rise of Gru," "Thor: Love and Thunder" and "Elvis."

Should have just called this “The Build-up”. As 90% of this film is slow, boring, and build up to a reveal which isn’t much of a shock if you’ve at all seen a trailer for this movie.
The run time is far too long for what little is going on in this movie.
Staring with a silly concept. DNA test leads to a meeting, leads to traveling across the world to a wedding. If someone does that after just meeting a person, you deserve what happens to you.
From there we get tense moment after tense moment, with a few jump scares sprinkled in. It is all just paced so poorly that by the time we get to the last 25 mins you are ready for it to ramp up just for it to end.
Much better off watching Ready or Not again over this. Both have weddings gone wrong. Except one is good.

It’s been way too long since we got a vampire movie coming our way. And to be honest, it was worth the wait.

The Invitation starts with a terrific scene that pays homage to The Omen. After that scene, it’s just a build-up with some well-placed scary scenes that brings great tension and terror to the theater until the final 20 minutes when everything is on fire, literally.

Don’t go with the mind thinking it’ll be like a 30 Days of Night movie or even a supernatural movie because, yes it has its moments, but overall it’s not like a Paranormal Activity kind of movie.

Even if we have seen this story many times, I still had a lot of fun with it. It’s a smooth ride. The movie is not perfect and doesn’t reinvent the genre of vampire but it’s still a great addition.

The only complaint I can tell is that the movie is way too dark. I wish we could have seen the creatures more.
