Who were TamilRockers?
Tamilrockers was a piracy website run by a group known by the same name. The origins of the group are largely unknown, but if some reports are to be believed, they came into existence around 2011. This was a time when torrent sites like The Pirate Bay were well-known platforms to download pirated content for free.
Initially, the group was relatively unknown as they only uploaded Tamil movies on their website. His popularity grew when he expanded to bootlegging pirated content from other regional languages.
The size of the group still remains a mystery. However, the extent of his operations indicated that he had a presence outside India.
How did the police deal with the threat?
In March 2008, the Kerala Police arrested three people allegedly linked to TamilRockers on piracy charges. Karthi, allegedly the brain behind TamilRockers, was arrested in Tamil Nadu's Villupuram along with two of his associates Prabhu and Suresh.
The police made these arrests, acting on several complaints from filmmakers that their films were uploaded to illegal torrent sites within days of their release. The group reportedly leaked Mohanlal's hit film Pulimurugan online, and is also said to be behind the leaks of Pranav Mohanlal's debut film, Aadhi.
