19(1)(a) is a Malayalam movie written and directed by debutant Indhu V.S. The movie 19(1)(a) stars Vijay Sethupathi, Nithya Menen, Indrajith Sukumaran and Indrans in the lead roles. The movie mark Vijay Sethupathi's Malayalam debut. Anto Joseph and Neeta Pinto produced the movie under the banner Anto Joseph Film Company and Aan Mega Media.

In 19(1)(a) writer and debutant director Indu VS takes her time to build a world for the central character who remains nameless. It's an uncomplicated world, where nothing much happens. The camera languidly captures her day as she shuttles between her home and her rundown stationary shop. The film is set in a sleepy town where she lives with her widowed father. A disclaimer, upfront — the narrative flow will compel the viewer to focus hard in order to stay in pace with the film. Though the director has noble intentions as she tries to weave a story aligning with the title (named after Article 19 of the Indian constitution, which upholds freedom of speech and expression)

she is neither able to utilize her actors well nor construct a compelling narrative. A large chunk of the film focuses on the woman (Nithya Menen) — you see her packing lunch, traveling to work on a scooter, sitting at her shop and scanning copies, lunching with her friend, exchanging pleasantries with a few people and returning home at night. There is a cleave here – the moment Menen steps into the frame, with her auburn tinted hair and endearing smile, she sticks out like a sore thumb in the eco-system she inhabits. Her no-makeup look and drab salwar suits cannot hide her urbane sophistication. The other pivotal character in the film is that of Tamil activist and writer Gauri Shankar, played by Vijay Sethupathi. He walks into her store to submit his manuscript for a copy and disappears.

The character, clearly inspired by late activist Gauri Lankesh, is not fleshed out at all. Sethupathi is wasted in the bit role. Any attempt to lend depth to his character seems force-fed through farcical lines (bearing the present political scenario in mind) mouthed by ancillary characters. So, as his friend and publisher, Anand (a stoic Indrajith), extolls Gauri's goodness and activism, after he is murdered, his receptionist looks at the owner of the stationary shop (Menen) with apprehension as she drops by at his office with the manuscript. The cop investigating Gauri's murder performs through cold stares and token media bytes; equally trite is a television journalist. All of these episodes lead to nothing — it's like reading a book with crucial sections ripped out. The subject's gravity is not expressed well at all, thanks to a lazy plot and lackluster execution.

Alarmingly underwritten are the passages involving the woman and her own inner conflicts, as she deals with the death of a stranger. While we understand her compassion towards the dead man, we are left to wonder what could have been the reason for the many sleepless nights that followed. There is a scene where she goes to meet his sister, clutching a bag containing the manuscript. As she leaves her house, she runs back and gives her a hug. It does not have the desired impact. There is no clarity in her arc. Similarly, her friendship with her Muslim friend is a failed attempt to address the lack of agency in a Muslim woman's life. Ditto for the hospital scene when she shouts at her father for being careless. The writer/ director fails to imbue life into what could have been deeply poignant moments. Some sequences seem as if they were added as an afterthought — her friend's wedding, for instance. There is no ambiguity in the film's politics but the lack of nuance robs it of its noble plans.
