Metro Rail is a type of high-capacity railway system which is also called a rapid transit system. It usually has a track above street level on elevated structures that are constructed of steel or concrete. It is one of the fastest ways of communicating in large cities. With a view to saving Dhaka from unbearable traffic jams, the construction of a metro rail project is almost done.

  • It is a part of the 20 years long Strategic Transport Plan (STP) outlined by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) a government agency.
  • The route of the metro rail project is 20.1 km from Uttara to Motijheel with 16 elevated stations. Initiatives have been taken to extend MRT Line-6 from Motijheel to Kamalapur Railway Station. This will enable the passengers of Kamalapur Railway Station to travel by metro rail.
  • The cost of the project is estimated at $2,82 billion.JICA and the government of Bangladesh are funding the project.

 24 metro trains are needed for the MRT-6 route.
 Each train has six coaches.
 Each coach is 3m wide and 20m long. Train bodies are built with aluminum alloys.

 About 2000 passengers will be able to travel on one train at a time. Accordingly, about 60,000 passengers will be traveling every hour.

  • The "Uttara-Motijheel" line, would connect the northern Uttara area to the central Motijheel area of Dhaka.
