February 21st is the day of red letters in our history. It is celebrated as Shaheed Day or Mother Language Day. Throughout 1952, the then East Pakistan students and the general public protested against the unwavering declaration of Pakistani leaders that Urdu would be the only state language of Pakistan. Bengali wrote and protested against this unjust imposition and denial of the status of their mother tongue. They demanded that Bengali be given the status of a dignified language. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on February 21, 1952, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. Rafiq, Jabbar, Salam, Barkat, and some other heroic souls were killed. They are the first martyrs of the world for language. This bloodshed is historic on 21st February. Since then the day is being celebrated as Shaheed Day. The martyrs have brought the dignity of their mother tongue to their homes through their sacrifice and blood. In recognition of the struggle and sacrifice of the brave Bengalis and for the promotion and survival of every language in the world, UNESCO declared 21st February as the International Mother Language Day in 1997. Since then the day has been celebrated with worldwide honor and glory.

২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি আমাদের ইতিহাসে স্মরণীয় দিন। এটি শহীদ দিবস বা মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে পালন করা হয়। 1952 জুড়ে তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের ছাত্র এবং সাধারণ জনগণ পাকিস্তানি নেতাদের অবিচল ঘোষণার বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদ করেছিল যে উর্দুই হবে পাকিস্তানের একমাত্র রাষ্ট্রভাষা। এই অন্যায্য আরোপ এবং তাদের মাতৃভাষার মর্যাদা অস্বীকার করার প্রতিবাদে বাংলা রচিত ও প্রতিবাদ করে। তারা বাংলাকে মর্যাদা ভাষার মর্যাদা দেওয়ার দাবি জানান। ১৯৫২ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাসে ছাত্রদের নিয়ে আসা মিছিলে পুলিশ গুলি চালালে তাদের বিক্ষোভ শেষ হয়। রফিক, জব্বার, সালাম, বরকতসহ কয়েকজন বীর আত্মাকে হত্যা করা হয়। ভাষার জন্য তারাই পৃথিবীর প্রথম শহীদ। এই রক্ত-ঝরা ঐতিহাসিক ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি। এরপর থেকে দিবসটি শহীদ দিবস হিসেবে পালিত হচ্ছে। শহীদরা তাদের ত্যাগ ও রক্তের মাধ্যমে মাতৃভাষার মর্যাদা তাদের ঘরে ঘরে তুলে এনেছেন। বীর বাঙালিদের সংগ্রাম ও আত্মত্যাগের স্বীকৃতিস্বরূপ এবং বিশ্বের প্রতিটি ভাষার প্রচার ও টিকিয়ে রাখার জন্য ১৯৯৮ সালে ইউনেস্কো ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে। তারপর থেকে দিবসটি বিশ্বব্যাপী সম্মান ও গৌরবের সঙ্গে পালিত হচ্ছে।
