The Mauritanian Movie Review and Spoiler
The Mauritanian movie is based on the true story of the life of a Muslim boy arrested on suspicion of being a terrorist. When an innocent person has to endure torture only out of fear of religion, it is really tragic. After watching this movie, I realized what the real picture of the fear of terrorism is.
The Mauritanian movie chronicles the most difficult chapter in Mohamedou Ould Slahi's life when, sometime after 9/11, he was suddenly arrested by police on suspicion of being a terrorist from his own home and taken to a horrific prison in Cuba. Where day after day, year after year he is subjected to inhuman torture in the name of interrogation. Can Slahi fight alone? Will he get his freedom back? Is the arrest of him just a suspicion or is there some kind of conspiracy behind it?
The events of the movie are very sensitive and important in many cases. The story is sure to strike a chord in anyone's mind. However, the movie did not do justice to the story. I like this movie and I believe many people will like it but the movie is not good in a technical sense. The main reason for liking the movie is the amazing fact of the movie and Tahar Rahim's performance as Slahi. The main reason the movie is not good is movie editing.
Movie editing is impossibly random. This sudden past scene is this sudden present. Again, in the midst of all these Messi situations, a sudden dream sequence.
Such a beautiful story could easily have been presented in a simple way but it has been edited in a random way without it. In many scenes, it took time to understand what time was being shown. Another thing is that the movie is not arranged at all. There was no smooth transition from one scene to another. Many people may get confused while watching the movie. But the last half hour of the movie is very beautiful. If the whole movie had been shown the way the last part was arranged, this movie would have easily become one of the best movies of last year.
The story of the movie is the biggest plus point of the movie. I have heard many times that people are scared of terrorism and terrorism, but watching this movie gives the idea that people can torture an innocent person in this way only on suspicion. Slahi's life is proof of how horrible stereotyping is because of religion. At one point you can't hold back the tears when you see and know what was done to him. Of course, Tahar Rahim's role as Slahi is a special contribution to the movie's effect being so emotionally impactful.
There is no way to miss the story of Tahar Rahim's performance in this movie. One was dialogue, body language and expression were on the spot. He was able to connect nicely emotionally with the audience. He has already received a well-deserved nomination at Bafta for this performance. I had hoped a bit that he might get a surprise nomination at the Oscars but the name of this movie doesn't even smell in any category at the Oscars.
Jodie Foster plays Slahi's lawyer Nancy Hollander in the supporting role in the movie. He has also acted quite well but not much involvement is made with him maybe his character is a bit hard-hearted. Other supporting characters are Shailene Woodley and Benedict Cumberbatch. Both of them have acted elegantly in their respective roles.
In the end, I will say that it is important to watch the movie and everyone should watch it. Everyone needs to know the story of Slahi and everyone should watch Tahar Rahim's performance. Although the whole movie is not made in a very good way, many people will like the movie. You can easily get the movie on any torrent site.
