Such a large task is in the process of being handed over to a consortium of three companies, including two companies that have been convicted in different countries and paying bribes to a local company with a capital of one hundred dollars. Experts believe that if they are given the job, there is a fear that the project will be ruined. The consortium's member companies are the Japanese Marubeni Corporation, Swiss trading firm Vital, and local agent Powerco International. Of this, the paid-up capital of Bangladeshi company Powerco is only 100. Vittal, another member of the consortium, has been accused of bribery in various parts of the world. In December, the US and Brazilian regulators fined Vittal 184 million for bribery.
The company has also been fined in Ethiopia and Mexico for bribery. An investigation by the US government itself has revealed the truth. Marubeni was once blacklisted by JICA for corruption while working in Bangladesh. They also lack experience in doing such work. Experts in the field say that the BPC has chosen this consortium for mysterious reasons after so many things. However, 3 more foreign companies have submitted their letters of interest to BPC to get work on this mega project. BPC has already written to the Energy Department to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the accused consortium. The letter was handed over by BPC chairman Abu Bakar Siddique on January 19. In the letter, he asked for permission to sign an MoU with the consortium. An analysis of Jugantar's research, BPC's letter, and the data of the international organization Bloomberg have revealed this shocking information. According to sources, Japan has expressed interest in investing in the project through its domestic agency JICA.
They proposed to implement the project through a consortium with a Japanese company as a lead partner. Following this, last year Japan's Mitsui submitted a joint venture proposal with South Korean LPG company SK Gas to BPC. Long after, two more companies submitted their letters of interest to work on the project.
